About Port of Miami

The Port of Miami, Florida -- often referred to simply as Port Miami -- is the second largest economic engine for the city of Miami. The port contributes nearly $20 billion to the local economy each year, and generates upwards of 150,000 jobs in the region.

Work on the Port of Miami began in 1960, and it was originally contained to Dodge Island. Throughout the years, as the port expanded, more sea walls, and filler material were added. The port has come to rest on a man-made island, which is bordered by the main ship channel and fisherman's channel, and accessed by the port bridge.

The northwest corner of Port Miami is home to 175 relocated corals, which make up the Coral Habitat Area, an effort of the port to sustain and respect the local sea life. Other birds and sea life have been relocated to places such as Oleta River State Park. Any time trees need to be removed in the name of port expansion, they are also relocated to other open spaces in the city.

Port of Miami welcomes more cruise passengers than any other port in the world. In 2011, the port saw about 4 million cruise travelers, who were embarking to destinations such as the Caribbean and the Bahamas. In total, Port of Miami has seven separate cruise terminals, each of which is easily accessed by an individual drop-off area and entryway for easier check-in. Cruise lines that utilize Port of Miami include Carnival, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line.

The Port of Miami is also used for cargo transport. It's the top container port in Florida, handling cargo that includes produce, electronics, automobiles, and paper. When it comes to cargo transport, Port of Miami is the 11th busiest port in the Untied States.
